Willmott Dixon, the company in charge of building their portion of the Movement Greenwich have a running webcam of their projects. The project On Greenwich High Street adjacent to Greenwich DLR and Mainline Station, has been steadily rising out of the ground.

Greenwich rising attended one of the first meetings that Cathedral Group held and were impressed with the community engagement. At that time they were discussing the impact of the piling noises as well as talking about parking to alleviate fears. The new road that will cross through the development was one topic which they stated will be a pedestrian road with access only to emergency vehicles – contrary to a visual rendering which they stated was incorrect in showing a black cab.

The development will consist of 358 student apartments, 181 residential apartments, a health and fitness club, and a convenience food store.

Willmott Dixon’s latest webcam Shows us the current stage of development.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) have been awarded the £100 million scheme to design the 370-home project at Enderby’s Wharf. The project, helmed by Cathedral Group also responsible for The Movement (MVMNT) project, has been quiet for a while until now and was at one point pegged to be open before the Olympics as Mayer Boris Johnson had hoped.

The Enderby Wharf project will see a cruise liner port allowing cruise ships that can carry roughly 3,000 people to dock in Greenwich creating a further tourist destination in the maritime heartland of Greenwich. It also falls in line with the Royal Borough’s plan of ensuring that right along the river from The O2 down to the Cutty Sark there would be attractions, walks, uninterrupted cycle paths and things to see and do.

It would be hailed as the 1st London International Cruise Liner Terminal. There will also be a 251 room hotel in addition to 370 residential apartments and townhouses. We have previously reported that the new homes at this project include 770 luxury townhouses and apartments. So it seems that either the project is being scaled back or AHMM are designing a portion of the residential plots.

The cruise liner project has had planning permission for quite sometime now. Back in Aug 21 2011 we reported on the project and showed renderings of how the finished project may look like.

Just next door to the development lies the recently purchased Mordern Warf. In March 2012 Cathedral Group and Development Securities PLC acquired Mordern Wharf; the site of a once active refinery called Tunnel Refineries which became known as later became Amylum which is part of Tate and Lyle. 853blog covers its demise as well as photographs of what was left. Mordern Wharf is also part of the plan to ensure that along the river between the Cutty Sark and the O2 residents and visitors can journey, cycle, relax, socialise and enjoy the riverside. Gone will all the abandon warehouses and factories, replaced with cycle paths, restaurants, benches and homes.

The long awaited heart of east Greenwich development is off to a flying start. After years of waiting the first two floors of the first phase off the project can be seen starting to peer over the building site walls. Meanwhile from the air you can clearly see the different sections mapped out. The project is set to be developed in stages. This will be part of the first phase were we will eventually see 645 homes, a leisure centre, library, council service centre, health centre, retail spaces and a new public square. It has been stated that by late 2013 the first phase should be completed.

The following diagram shows the part of the project that is currently being built. Stay tuned for more progress over the months.

The Hong Kong investors actions have seemed to have spurred activity on the peninsula. The student block on plot MO117 is steadily rising out of the ground with planning permission changes appearing on the council website for minor building alterations as with any construction process.

In addition the Greenwich Millienium Village has begun marketing the next phase of development with new boarded signs surrounding the site.

With renewed attention back on the peninsula due also in inpart to Boris’s proposals for a new tunnel crossing we may not just be seeing phase 2 of the GMV but a phase 2 of the Greenwich Peninsular master plan.

Hadley Mace to hold info session on Heart of East Greenwich Sunday 15th July

Hadley Mace, the joint venture between Hadley property group and Mace group that are delivering the Heart of East Greenwich, are to host a information session for the community and nearby residents. Hadley say that it is an opportunity for people to learn more about the homes and the services that HoEG will bring.

This computer generated image is indicative of the buildings and site only and is not an exact representation of the completed buildings and are subject to architectural and design development.

The site will be the future home to 645 homes, a leisure centre, library, council service centre, health centre, retail spaces and a new public square.

Jason Wood, Project Director, Hadley Mace, commented:

“Through working closely with residents and businesses within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Hadley Mace will create a community hub for all residents of the borough to enjoy. Following the appointment of Hadley Mace as development partners in February, we will now move forward with our significant investment, to create a high quality place for residents, shoppers and visitors alike.” HCA

In March the Greenwich Phantom blog posted up images of the “ground breaking event” to mark the start of works on the site. The event was attended by Councillor Chris Robert and was joined by representatives from Hadley Mace, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), NHS Greenwich and London and Quadrant.

For those worried about the noise associated with the construction currently Hadley Mae state via their website that when construction begins the working hours will be Monday to Friday: 08:00am – 6.30pm and Saturdays: 08.00am – 1.00pm. Work will not be permitted on Sundays and Bank Holidays, although special permission can be granted specifically though rarely through request in writing to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

We reported on the planned developments on peninsula Quay recently. Today we report on the development just behind that where there will be a student accommodation block and some proposed layout and road changes. NO506 gets a trimming in terms of the size and shape to allow for a more open feel for the area and leaner shape for the building. Here we see an older design from the 2004 approved master plan:

Here is the revised master plan for that corner and space between the proposed AEG hotel and the peninsula quays development we reported on earlier.

The building just behind one of the two towers will be a student accommodation however final designs have not been submitted. As with many of the plots on the master plan, the white featureless buildings represent the size & shape and are there as a guide for architects.

Planning documents state that much of the emphasis of the design is on improving connections for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles, with clearly defined routes using paving and tree planting that “connect the scheme and the riverfront with the wider context and transport hubs.” The illustration seems to also reinforce a strong connection to the O2 which at the moment is reserved for staff and has no access at all. They aim to open up this area and allow free flow of pedestrians with eventual access through to the river fronts surrounding the O2.

The planning permissions for the road layouts, parking, public realm and landscaping prepare the area to accommodate the future developments surrounding them. We expect that this would have a knock on effect on surrounding developments which would result in projects and constructions being delivered faster. Quintain have recently been quite vocal in expressing their commitment to accelerating the delivery of such projects.

After the Investment news that Dr. Henry Cheng Kar-shun will invest £500m into the greenwich peninsula project, Quintain, as part of their investor and analyst presentation, released some un seen imagery.

These images illustrate the plots NO601 & NO608 that are part of the Peninsula Quay district on the North West side of the Peninsula. The architecture appears to be by BFLS specifically a team including Jason Sandy from the look of the planning documents. The developments overlook the proposed green river walls and residents will also have a view of the canary ward skyline from their windows. The new river walls will have Native Phragmites australis (the same long grass near the North Greenwich Pier) reed planting to the terraces which would create undisturbed refuges for birds and other waterfowl.

The full eventual look of the west side of the peninsula that faces Canary Warf can be seen in the following image which includes the approved AEG hotel, the approved NO602.

Quintain talk of accelerating the development which has quite frankly seen the whole of the peninsula frozen for four years with little or no activity of the promised developments. What is good news is that Dr. Henry Cheng Kar-Sun’s Knight Dragon have committed to unconditionally finance the first phase of these accelerated developments: NO601N Mansion Block and NO608 Tower which deliver 235 residential units.

Greenwich Rising took a step into a cabin on the cable car to experience the first ever London Cable car transport link. Named the Emirates Air Line, it connects the Greenwich Peninsula with the Royal Victoria Docks. It was a project which hoped to ferry olympic ticket holders between the Greenwich Arena and the Excel Exhibition Venue. However Mace, the company behind the construction, were tight lipped as was London Mayor Boris, thankfully they have surprised us all by announcing a few weeks ago that it will indeed be ready by the end on June.

The Greenwich Arena also known as the O2 but not during the games, will play host to basketball, gymnastics and trampolining. Meanwhile at the Excel exhibition centre boxing, fencing, Judo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, weightlifting and Wrestling will take place within its walls.

It is also hoped that after the Olympics commuters will use it to save minutes on the DLR to connect straight with the DLR at North Greenwich or perhaps a scenic relaxing journey back home over the thames after a long day at the office. The latter is something that I can assure you will happen as the journey on the “Air Line” was beautiful. The seating is adequately comfortable as far as TFL go, but you won’t notice that when you are soaring up to almost 300 feet above the thames.

Thats higher than the O2. The ride is smooth after the bumpy acceleration out of the station. The view is impressive though there is not much to see on the south side, looking north towards the canary ward and the O2 itself however is rather breathtaking.

Passengers can buy Tickets at the automated machines or from the ticket desk. The Day we went to the Emirates Air Line there were long queues of people simply there to take a ride on the new transport link and it seems that this will also be something of a tourist attraction. Hopefully with the cash injection of Dr. Henry Cheng Kar-shun, a Hong Kong billionaire who has invested £500m into the greenwich peninsula master plan, we will have a lot more beautiful architecture to look at on the peninsula on our way across the river.

Cost of Tickets

Adult single fare – £3.20

Child single fare – £1.60

Round trip – £6.40

Frequent traveller – £16

There is also a pricing document that includes all the type of tickets and oyster prices available.

News has come in that there is a new catalyst that would bring a much needed kickstart or restart to the greenwich peninsula master plan that has slowed right down due to the economic climate and lack off financial confidence.

Dr. Henry Cheng Kar-shun, a Hong Kong billionaire will invest £500m into the greenwich peninsula project which we cover here on this website in much detail. We have seen slow development over the years. This prompted Dr Henry Cheng to pay off Lend Lease with a £100 million pound cheque it seems for lack of energy and movement regarding the development of the area. Quintain has formed a joint venture which will see Dr. Henry Cheng Kar-shun’s Knight Dragon control 60% stake in the development scheme.

The Gaurdian have quoted Maxwell James the chief executive of Quintain as saying “Together we are well placed to turn our vision for this landmark project for London into reality, creating thousands of homes and jobs in the process,” he said.

Some of the projects that are yet to be built:

Peninsula plot M0117

Previously named during its construction the O2 Skywalk, AEG has announced that the attraction designed by the original architects of the O2 itself will be called Up at The O2. The architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners have designed the attraction that will see groups of people embarking on a 90minute experience up and over the O2. During the Olympics the venue will be renamed from the O2 to the North Greenwich Arena, but the name for the attraction above it will not be temporarily named “Up at the North Greenwich Arena” thankfully.

Participants will be enjoy spectacular 360 degree views of London from the viewing platform in the centre of the roof, before finishing with what AEG calls a “thrilling” descent back to base to complete your adventure. We reported back in February that planning documents stated that the ascent will take 7 minutes, then at the top climbers can rest to take in the view, then decent will also take 7 mins with the whole experience taking around 19 minutes to complete. However there may be extra activities in the pavilions that may take place. Participants may watch a short video, receive some safety instructions and then preparations for the climb. Climbers are required to be 10 years or over and under 18′s must be accompanied by an adult.

The logo has also been unveiled.

The attraction is set to open on the 21st of June.

Planning permission has been submitted to the council for the development of two major supermarkets and three additional retail units on the “land north of woolwich road and west if Gallions Road”. It will be beside the proposed New Travel Lodge hotel that we learned about last year and also behind the retail park where outfitter, H&M, Next, and Maplin are located. Though it remains to be seen if the Marks & Spencer outlet at BP will still remain open as it is a decent sized M&S outlet that sell a lot more than the products available at Asda’s petrol station, yet it is just across the road from the proposed New Store.

With little or no activity at the Heart of East Greenwich site on Woolwich road, another development just yards away could begin before it does. The development of Blackwall lane, given planning permission before Greenwich Rising launched, will bring new homes, restaurants, offices and other retail to the unused land. The development actually consists of three separate sites all situated in close proximity to each other.

The main development will run along Blackwall lane between Pelton lane and Commerell street. Its ground floor will consist of mainly the retail elements, restaurants, shops and also a bicycle store for residents. The first, second, third and fourth floors will see the apartments with the corner over looking the junction where Vanburgh hill, woolwich road and blackwall lane meet will extend to five floors. The side of this development on Pelton Lane, next to the corner elevation will consist of four 2 bedroom town houses. Further along the development, it should be noted that the end sitting along Commerell Street will be only extend to a third floor.

The second largest site sits across Commerell street, still along Blackwall Lane and will consist of residential dwellings only. A number of 3 bedroom townhouses and a 4 bedroom townhouse will feature there as well as a mixture of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.

Coming off the road onto Commerell street will see the third site which will all be townhouses.

The Blackwall lane development could be completed before the first phases of the Heart of East Greenwich is complete, however the task of demolishing the existing structures still have to take place. This is something that HoEG has already completed. Though no activity is visible from the Woolwich road development, planning permissions have been submitted for drainage, pilling and little things like wheel washing facilities. This is where the council can ensure that “dirty” vehicles carrying earth from the site are properly cleaned when leaving the site so as not to cause unsightly lines of earth and mud on the roads around and leading away from the site.

The development will be right next to St Josephs’s Roman Catholic Church and St Josephs Roman Catholic Primary School and the planning permission includes ideas for a wall that will form part of the school play ground such as, green jungle walls, play frames, bird boxes, climbing walls. There will be brown roofs with solar panels (PV) for cooling, inslulation bio-diversty and with regard to the PV panels, providing a supply of electricity. A communal garden will also be part of the plans as seen here.

This exciting development would bring life to the area and in addition compliment the HoEG development.

The approved Hotel as well as proposed residential dwellings on the east facing part of the Greenwich Peninsula namely the Peninsula Quays, are to get a much needed public realm works. Essentially what is being proposed in these outline planning permission documents are better access by roads and by foot for pedestrians. Plans submitted last month mention two roundabouts, new access roads to the planned AEG hotel and other plots, changes to the alignment of the Thames path that would please cyclist, though not any time soon, but years down the line whereby cyclist and pedestrians would have an uninterrupted route along the thames. At the council master-plan meetings a few months ago, having an uninterrupted thames path was said to be a high priority and these plans seem to back up that idea.

Pedestrians, cyclists, residents and guests staying at the planned AEG hotel will be treated to a view of not only the canary warf on across the river but also a ecology area.

Document on the Ecology plans can be seen in this public document: Greenwich Peninsula Quay’s Riverwall – Landscape Statement: Northern Ecology Area PDF

A new community of homes are being proposed to re develop a disused Warehouse to the rear of Victoria way, in Charlton. This development will see 209, most of which will be affordable housing, being built and will comprise of family sized terraced houses as well as flats. There is a strong emphasis on the landscaping of the area as well as careful planning to shield the development from the noise of the blackwall tunnel approach A102 as well as the train tracks that is used by primarily for industrial purposes.

At the present moment the area looks unused and grim.

The warehouse, approximately 11,000sqm in size, has been vacant since March 2001.

The landscaping will feature decks, terraces and hedges. Pictures here show what the developers have done previously on other projects. MCA Landscape Architects are behind the designs being submitted to the council The site features a single entrance to the new development and sits at the corner of two major transport links, the A102 and the south east rail line. The aforementioned tracks that are rarely in use sit between the development and the A102.

The flats will sit to the back of the redevelopment site while the houses, which are of similar to the existing houses in height will be situated just behind the existing row of terraced houses this will allow the proposal to sit “sensitively within the prevailing urban form and improve the character and appearance of the area.” as stated in the planning documents.

A page is already up for potential owners and residence to register their interest.

A previous planning permission by Galliard Homes was turned down.

The shell of structure that will allow people to board the platform is visible. Construction workers can be seen on the roof creating the central viewing platform that sits right at the centre of the O2′s roof.

Inspired by the Sydney Harbour bridge skywalk, visitors would be allowed to climb up and over the O2 in small groups. The activity will include a break at the very top were participants can rest and take in the views of the skyline, Canary Wharf buildings and the impressive cable car and then climb down to the rear of the O2.

Greenwich Rising was at the London Cable Car construction to witness the hoisting of one of the final pieces of the third and final tower, the South Tower, of the Emirates Air Line Cable car, the first in London. The cable car will feature on the Transport for London Tube line that we all know and use and will introduce two new stations as part of the stops at either end of the cable car. At the royal docks it will be called “Emirates Royal Docks” and on the greenwich side “Emirates Greenwich Peninsula”. The Cable car will also ferry across people going to and from either London Olympic 2012 events held at the Royal Victoria Docks Excel Centre and the Peninsula’s O2.

On the 15th of March 2012, the final pieces were hoisted up via crane on to the impressive tower that has been constructed at the Emirates Greenwich Peninsula station. Mace say that it is the largest lifting capacity crane. Mace group say that the crawler crane, which runs on tracks and not wheels to aid mobility, was put together on-site over a period of two weeks and delivered on more than 70 articulated lorries. We witnessed the 183 metre high crane hoist up one of the final pieces onto the South Tower.

In the distance Cables can be seen threaded through the first North Tower on the other side of the river.

Plans have been submitted to the Royal Borough of Greenwich which will see the first plot on Royal Borough’s Peninsula for students. The plot just opposite MO117 and next to Greenwich Millennium Village will see the erection of two Nine storey block with a central courtyard. We believe there will be 264 units in total and would serve as a Ravensbourne Student Accommodation site.

Its location near GMV and a completed site aswell as another recently submitted application for plot MO117 hopefully would ensure that a less awkward isolation that we are currently seeing of the completed MO102 block by Bellway Homes. This Graphic shows the plots in the vicinity that have submitted or have been given planning permission.

The master plan curve that all buildings must align itself to will be broken by this building, its blocks instead will be staggered rather than curved or rotated to fit curve.

A ravensbourne sign will be placed on the corner of the building while the centre area of the front facing or public space facing side will have a glass windows that could be used to house creative displays similar to what you see in the Selfridges shop Windows on Oxford Street.

The nine story blocks are designed to bring light into the centre courtyard and also enable MO117 behind it to receive more sunlight. Residence here will be well served by the shops and cafes at the Greenwich Millennium Village and perhaps more retail units will open in the currently Vacant Unit by the Bus top at GMV. With Ravensbourne the main reason for this development, It may be a project that springs up faster than the surrounding plots but will in turn spur on activity to continue in the area.

The Royal borough of Greenwich has revealed it’s plans for Greenwich Peninsula West, Charlton Riverside, Eltham Town Centre and Woolwich Town Centre. The plans will be up for public consultation and presentation from Today (see the dates below).

These masterplan help the council achieve its 2027 vision, bring investment to the borough and facilitate strategic development planning in an attempt to halt out of synch ad-hoc developments. Need to work within a framework set by these master plans.

New Greenwich Peninsula West

We have seen how the Greenwich peninsula master plan gradually, although slowly, fulfilling its vision. Today we have One new residential development built, as well as the first phases of the GMV (Greenwich Millennium Village). Planning permission has been granted for three more in the same southern section as well as the riverside project opposite the pier. Greenwich Peninsula on the west side has, up until now, not had any master plan apart from the area west of the O2 which is named Peninsula Quays:

Existing Greenwich peninsula masterplan. Notice the area to the west has no plans.

Here is the new draft master plan up for consultation:

Part of the plan includes the large riverfront development proposed at Enderby Wharf and Lovell Wharf. This is the cruisliner and river pier plan.

The land near between the A102 and Millennium way which is currently barren and is home to the large gasholder could make way for a permanent home for the London Soccerdome (formerly the David Beckham Academy). Further more a proposed peninsula wide Combined heat and power energy centre to supply the homes and offices on the peninsula. In recent months Greenwich Rising has heard of a university student accommodation planning permission in this area which is now part of this plan.

A multi purpose statdium is also being proposed that will hold concerts, sports and similar events that will hold up to 40,000 people. Again all this is up for public consultation so the capacity could change and if people are concerned about the noise the council would have to alay those fears or risk this part of the plan being cut.

40,000 seater proposed multi purpose complex on greenwich peninsula, for concerts, sports events

DLR extension is proposed to run through the peninsula, with one of the stops being near the Enderby wharf riverside development and then curving off to join up at West Silvertown. It will run above and in the middle of the A2, would cross woolwich road then on to Kidbrook and ending at Falconwood.

The public consultation starts today. The times at time of writing are here:

The Greenwich Pier and restaurant buildings by the thames are appearing to be nearing completion. The next stage, possibly in a month or two, would be the respective owners of the restaurant and cafe spaces to begin their outfitting of the interiors. The restaurants that will take up the buildings include Nando’s Zizi and Byron.

The architectural drawings state that Nandos and Zizi restaurants will be housed in the west pavillion nearest to the Cutty Sark, whilst Byron will be in the east building. Byron will also have a 1st floor terrace, which looks onto the thames. A cafe is set to be sharing the west side of the east building.

The views in the restaurant are set to be particularly beautiful with one side facing the historic University Buildings, the museum and the newly restored Cutty Sark, whilst the other side will have views of the river thames.

The gates for the new greenwich pier have also been revealed by planning permission documents from TFL.

New details have emerged about the new Skywalk walkway that will allow visitors to walk over the top of the Dome in North Greenwich. The skywalk is already in construction near the entrance of the O2. The will be a small building at the front and also at the back of the O2 where the walkway terminates. The project shares similarities with the Sydney Harbour bridge where there is a organised climb right over the bridge.

Stairs will allow people to get to the walkway to begin their climb whilst it seems the end of the walkway on the far side may reach down to ground level.

The experience is one way only starting from the front of the O2, so expect to go forwards only. Furthermore At the top of the O2 the area will be wider than the rest of the walkway for climbers to rest.

Planning documents detail that the ascent will take 7 minutes, then at the top climbers can rest to take in the view, then decent will also take 7 mins with the whole experience taking around 19 minutes to complete.

The construction of the south tower started long ago, but the white towers are now being hoisted into place by giant cranes. One of the cranes is occupying the future Greenwich Riverside development, the closest residential project to the O2 that has been given the go ahead but is yet to start construction (more on that here),and the other sitting on the closed off thames path.

The Path along the river looks set to be open after the construction of the Emirates Cable car for at least 5 months before the inevitable request to close it again after the olympics which is a guess as to when the Riverside residential project may start construction.

The middle tower, on the opposite side of the thames has already seen the bottom half of its base fitted into place.

Future plans for the surrounding area include the closure of the car park next to the Cable car. Currently there are two car parks separated by a road, however in future it will become an open space with grass and trees as well as a series of parallel paths that lead to the thames path.

Other small details include a plan for a high quality Digital LED wall which may be used for information or advertisements. The council is considering the application for this digital screen and though there are no residents immediately adjacent to the cable car, in future there will be therefore the impact this will have on future residence will be taken into consideration.

A while ago we asked is the Greenwich Millennium Village still on track to complete its vision? Well it looks like documents where submitted to the council which suggest that progress is being made. The documents refer to the last stages of GMV phase 3, 4 and 5.

The documents show different options for the master-plan each with different although very similar placements and layouts of the buildings. A lot of attention is given to the environmental impact and ensuring that the project falls inline with rules and regulations.

There is an emphasis on green spaces which the engineering consultancy company Grontmij is helping develop. Grontmij has been responsible for the detailed design of the streets and spaces which form the Peninsula Central and riverside phases of the peninsula mastreplan and are now acting in an advisory role during construction.

Things are starting to look positive, a great deal of consideration and planning is being carried out before any buildings go up, the noise from neighbouring facilities, and environmental aspects are what is being carefully picked through.

Will this be the next residential project to be built? The Greenwich Peninsular is slowly filling out its master plan. Every time a new feature like the Skywalk or the Cable car is shown in a video or still image rendering, some of the previously white buildings have suddenly gain character and colour, this is because those project designs have been finalised and are next in line to be built. So how soon will the residential project next to the Peninsula’s riverboat pier be built?

The project will have homes that Crest Nicholson will be offering to potential future residents. After speaking to the sales department, a definite date has not been set for the project however they believe that construction may start in 2013 and not this year.

The residential block named, east riverside, is part of the master plan’s district called peninsula riverside. It will be located adjacent to the pier and along side the cable car. East Riverside will provide 305 one, two and three bedroom apartments, together with approximately 5,000 sq ft of retail floor space. Some of the apartments will have Roof gardens, raised courtyards and balconies that create a range of external spaces from which residents can enjoy the riverside setting. There will also be 120 car parking spaces for residents.

The project has been designed by architects FLACQ who say “The design makes reference to its riverside location, from a colour palette derived from river vessels to the shapes of stacked shipping containers.”

What other developments are next in line for the peninsula? We will have more on that in the next few days.

Is the Greenwich Millennium Village going to continue with its phase 2 and 3 developments? The website suggests that they are expecting to submit an outline planning application to Greenwich Council later this year. However it is unclear when this site was updated and what year they are referring too.

Phase 3 is the green grasslands that currently lie behind the Odeon which a row of houses, that is part of the GMV phase 1, currently overlook. Phase 2 is the site nearer to the Greenwich Yacht Club and next to the eco park. The masterplan centres around the green space that already exist, the park will also see a stream extending from the water from the pond that the houses in the north part of the village overlook.

This is what the website says:

Following the selection of the design team, GMVL is now moving forward with the project and is expecting to submit an outline planning application to Greenwich Council later this year for around 1,800 homes, together with commercial and community buildings, in tandem with a detailed application for around 500 homes.

The hope is that the master plan as seen below will continue. When the project completes however, how will that affect the shopping experience along bugsby way? Will some open up exits to the rear like the fire exit of the Odeon. For Sainsbury, there is a path from behind it between it and comet.

Update:
In November 2010 Studio 54 Architecture won the international competition to design the masterplan and final phases of the Greenwich Millennium Village, working in collaboration with Jestico + Whiles and Peter Barber Architects.

The design process has provided an exciting opportunity to review the nature of the urban community in the 21st Century and to reflect on a appropriate design response for this site. The particular site context is unique: the industrial complex to the east, the Thames to the north, the main roads to the south, the existing Village to the west, the legacy of Erskine and the existing Village, the problems of noise pollution, the ground pollution and the local micro climate.

Since we launched this site Greenwichrising.com we have been covering the news of new transport links or new apartments as they come along. This means theres is a backlog of things we want to write about that has already happened and is ongoing. Why don’t we focus on new rather than ongoing projects as well, simply because we want you to be able to see all that is going on, thats why we have a map section and a featured projects menu. Things like the Kidbrooke estate, we have yet to write about since we launched, another is the heart of greenwich development – which we will talk about now.

In east greenwich, if you are a frequent driver along the A206 woolwich road trafalgar road, you may have seen each time you pass a blue boarded up site featuring colourful graffiti and bearing the logo of the homes and communities agency. It is the site of the former Greenwich district Hospital which was demolished in 2006. The hospital was built in the 1960′s upon the site of the previous St Alfege’s Hospital, which was built in 1931 and replaced in 1963, but the district hospital was closed in 2001. Vanbrugh Hill is the road that runs along side it and it runs uphill toward blackheath, the road is perpendicular to the A206 trafalgar road/woolwich road which heads toward greenwich in the west and woolwich eastward.

The site will be the future home to 645 homes, a leisure centre, library, council service centre, health centre, retail spaces and a new public square. Hadley Mace is the group in charge of delivering this vision. The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) website details the project, “The focal point of the development is the Greenwich Centre which will house a library, leisure facilities, an NHS health centre and new Greenwich Council service centre. Residents will benefit from the provision of these first-class amenities alongside the new homes, almost a third of which will have three or four bedrooms to accommodate families.”

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “News that the Heart of East Greenwich project is now pressing on full steam ahead is fantastic to hear. It is a landmark regeneration scheme, as part of a determined effort we are making across London to bring forward public land for development. As well as bringing some vital new facilities such as a library and leisure centre to the community, it will deliver quality housing that will make a real difference to families in the area.”

Work was said to start at the end of 2011 and it looks like from the beginning of january 2012 that something is actually happening. For a long time there has been doubts over when the project will begin construction as well as its funding. It is thought that the project aims to demonstrate exemplary performance in energy, water use, materials use, waste, construction practice, planing and biodiversity to achieve Net Zero Carbon. This Zero Carbon initiative is a requirement for new developments as stated on the London Authority website. It requires the following in planning permissions:

Be lean: use less energy

Be clean: supply energy efficiently

Be green: use renewable energy

Architects Make are behind the design of the new east Greenwich hub and their idea was minimise environmental impact and reduce water and energy consumption. Planning permission was granted on 2008 yet only this year 2012 has work actually began.

Planning permission was granted on 2008 yet only this year 2012 has work actually began. The project is said to be split into phases of completion, with the first phase of homes and community facilities to be ready by late 2013. Phase two completion will be in 2016.

Here is an arial view of what the project will look like.

On Greenwich High Street adjacent to Greenwich DLR and Mainline Station, a new development is underway. Granted permission in April 2011, the new development will see a 358 student apartments, 181 residential apartments, a health and fitness club, and a convenience food store. The site will also be home to a bike shop, secure bike storage, a nursery and business incubator or ‘start up’ units according to Cathedral, the group in charge of delivering the project.

The Movement Greenwich also known as MVMNT is aiming to be pedestrian friendly as well as cycle friendly with the project including a cycle-through cafe. The Greenwich West community centre is also set to benefit from this project as it will see them have a new extension.

Cathedrals officia press statement read: The £100m project has been given the working title, ‘The Movement’, to reflect Cathedral Group’s vision of creating a dynamic and sustainable community on the site, which has been vacant since 2007. Designed by award-winning architects Studio Egret West and HLM, The Movement is anticipated to be an exemplar 21st century development with an on-site ‘energy centre’ providing renewable energy, 418 spaces available for bicycles and an innovative ‘bike cafe’ which will double up as a cycle repair shop. If successful, Cathedral’s proposals will generate £275 million for the local economy over the next ten years.
